"The Roots of Songwriting," musical discussion workshop with Scott Alarik
47 Palmer St. in Harvard Sq. Cambridge, MA 02138 United States
"I stand on your hillside and see the world through your eyes. My job is to tell you something you already know."
Woody Guthrie, on songwriting.
With live and archival music, colorful stories and conversation, Scott reveals how professional songwriters emerged from the musical traditions of ordinary people, from folk ballads to Medieval broadsides, parlor songs to pop tunes, Robert Burns to Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie to the songwriters of today. Along the way, he explores what makes a song last, how lyrics are different than poems, the origins of metaphor, imagery, and symbolism––and what the greatest songwriters say about their craft.
Presented as part of the New England Americana Festival. Scott also hosts the Saturday evening festival concert at Club Passim.
